What would your list be?

jtara made an interesting comment in a recent post:

I was able to register .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us, .co.uk. e.g. "a grand slam".

I have to say when registering names I tend to look for the Grand Slam however my Grand Slam is slightly different:

.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .co.uk, .eu, .in, .cn, .mobi

Funny thing is I only have one .us, my company name.

How many complete sets do I have? Not one!

My nearest is my company name however the .eu fiasco was squatted, grrr!

Anyone else do this?

I forgot .mobi. Yes, I consider ".mobi" part of a grand slam, and did register it in this case.

I was just going to post on a similar topic, so let's roll them up together.

What modifications to your domain name should you register as a protective measure? And should you "grand slam" the modifications?

The obvious modifications are inserting a dash between words, and registering the plural (or non-plural, if your name is a plural).

Obviously, a lot depends on the potential long-term value of the site, vulnerability to copy-catting, etc.

If you're launching a major search engine, registering every ccTLD you can will save you a lot of hassle and expense later.

I registered a very common misspelling of my domain name as i get 10-20% type-in traffic and it proved worth it. I 301ed it to my main site. I get the extra traffic and avoid any typo squatters. Would it be considered part of a grand slam? I think its worth considering.

.com, .net, .org, .co.uk, .ca [being based in Canada]

.mobi .eu .asia .info .biz are an absolute waste.

.mobi .eu .asia .info .biz are an absolute waste.

That is your opinion however I have to comment that this last week I have been at a massive international trade fair in Italy and I was very encouraged by the amount of companies actively using .eu on all their literature.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the volume of trucks on the autostrade with .eu addresses.

Just because you are not in a specific region one should not assume that everyone else shares your views, keep an open mind.

I am well acquainted with the domain space - just like most others, .eu was set up purely for profit reasons. And just like those others, none has been successful.

Are people using .eu? Sure - and people are using .inf too - but they are relatively rare.

EU is not a homogeneous region. They don't all speak the same language. It has the same problem as all the other newer ccTLDs (speculators bought up all the best domains). Right now its absolutely unproven.
