The Internet's key oversight agency has approved a plan to phase out the domain name for Yugoslavia, four years after the country dissolved following civil war. It'll take two or three more years for ".yu" users to fully transition to ".rs" for Serbia and ".me" for Montenegro...In unanimous votes last week, ICANN assigned ".me" to Montenegro's government and ".rs" to a group called the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names, a nonprofit organization formed for the task.

That doesn't surprise me because some time ago I spoke with a lady (in fact granny) that's responsible for domain registrations in Serbia at University of Belgrade. Instead of getting more information, she was just telling me about her plans to retire asap :)
Second problem is that in most (if not all, for Serbia and Croatia I'm sure) countries of ex YU, you need to start up a company for EACH country domain name you want to register. If you calculate how much it costs to start up a company and to keep it alive you will see its not so wise idea.
Third thing is that now you cannot register just .yu, you can only get .co.yu like in UK.
what about windows.me lol
2. "you need to start up a company for EACH country domain name you want to register": Inevitably someone comes up with a service that provides a "work around". Maybe not, though, if they choose to apply rigor to their standards. I would counsel that they should consider "making exceptions" in the case of certain generic words. OTOH, give the playfulness, fun, memorability and easy brandability of the (Word).me model the nation just might do better BY insisting that any business associated witht he domain actually be hosted within and fully operate out of the country. That would help them develop their tech infrastructure, provide jobs for local programmers, etc.
I sure hope someone in the LandOf.Me is thinking through the economic policy of the release of the .Me domain.
