Of course, .asia fits the description of a rTLD, the restrictions being geographical. However, .eu is considered a ccTLD rather than a rTLD and/or gTLD, I assume because it is in relation to a political entity (European Union) rather than simply a region.

Perhaps, but, even though .eu is based around political borders it does cover a geographical region rather than any one specific country. And then there is the new .asia coming. I do think we need a new acronym for regional TLDs as there are probably more on the way at some stage.
Perhaps rgTLD for regional TLD?

Building up the hierarchy, we have:-
Global - gTLD (also called general/generic TLD)
Regional -?
Country - ccTLD
Could we end up some day with localized TLDs, i.e., a domain extension for Sydney Australia? Unlikely IMO given the vast number of locales in this planet.
