We need a new Acronym!

... unless someone has already coined it.

We have TLD for Top Level Domain (.com).

We have ccTLD for Country Code Top Level Domain (.au).

But what about the new Regional Domains such as .eu and .asia?

Methinks we need rTLD for Regional Top Level Domain.

What say you?

Although not in widespread use, I believe the acronym "rTLD" usually refers to a restricted top-level domain, ie. a TLD which requires specific criteria such as .coop or .gov.

Of course, .asia fits the description of a rTLD, the restrictions being geographical. However, .eu is considered a ccTLD rather than a rTLD and/or gTLD, I assume because it is in relation to a political entity (European Union) rather than simply a region.

Hehe, yeah, I saw that yesterday as well after doing some more research, so rTLD is out.

>.eu is considered a ccTLD
Perhaps, but, even though .eu is based around political borders it does cover a geographical region rather than any one specific country. And then there is the new .asia coming. I do think we need a new acronym for regional TLDs as there are probably more on the way at some stage.

Perhaps rgTLD for regional TLD?

Just thinking a little ahead.

We have TLD for Top Level Domain (.com).

Actually .com would fall under gTLD for generic TLD.

How about aTLD for area TLD or lTLD for local TLD for .asia and .eu

/edit/ lTLD can also be location TLD

There is also city level, like .sg (singapore), which incidentally has some strange copyright/trademark laws for domain names.

To me, "area" and "local" imply a boundary size smaller than, and contained within, a country. Local Search is all about find things in your local area/town.

Building up the hierarchy, we have:-

Global - gTLD (also called general/generic TLD)
Regional -?
Country - ccTLD

Could we end up some day with localized TLDs, i.e., a domain extension for Sydney Australia? Unlikely IMO given the vast number of locales in this planet.

Ahhh, but Singapore is a city/country and so qualifies at the country level.

How about conTLD? As in continental, or...
