How Do I Handle An Offer To Sell?

Domain name offers

I was approached by email from an interested party to purchase my domain name <snip>

My question is first, how do you actually know what value to place on a domain name?

Do you have it appraised? By whom?

Do you arbitrarily out of the air pick a number or do you trust the potential buyer with his offer to be fare?

Where does one begin to get the highest and best offer or is it best to wait several years for future appreciation if that is an option.

Any advice from all you pros would be greatly appreciated.

Armand

Hello realtorac. Welcome to the Domain Forum.

The questions you ask have been answered, extensively, in the past and the vast majority of the guidance remains relevant to your situation.

I suggest you take a look in our Library:

[webmasterworld.com...]

There are threads - ratherlong and detailed ones - that discuss finding buyers, pricing domains, etc.

Once you take some time to read them if you still have any specific questions come on back and post them.

About the edit: Sorry, but we don't allow members to post their domains, especially when it relates to domains that are "on the market". Please take a few moments to read the Charter. It's a very good idea as the rules of play, here, are quite different than other domain forums. Mostly the rules are designed to limit or reduce the volume of "commerce" - domain for sale, appraise my domain, "use this tool", etc. - in the forum.

There are many variables in selling a domain name.

First is how valuable is it to you? Do you have definite plans for it? Is it in
a hot subject area? Do you have a site already in the works for it?

If you sold it would you have any remorse that you let it go. Every one has his
own reasons for keeping a domain or selling it.

In the end, as has been posted many times in this forum " its worth what any one is willing to pay for it,"

Start high and counter back and forth until an acceptable price for both parties is reached.

Hope this helps a little! KF

Do you arbitrarily out of the air pick a number or do you trust the potential buyer...

Usually when they ask if the name is for sale but don't mention a specific offer, they're just trying to see if you'll let it go cheap.

Whenever someone inquires about a name without an offer, I arbitrarily estimate its value and then multiply that by 5. MOst of the time they don't respond, although sometimes they will counter-offer, although I have never accepted one. However I did get one taker for 5 times what I thought it was worth, and of course I sold it! (Side note: I just looked up that domain and it is now expired and in "redemption period".)

My method probably wouldn't work for someone who wants to sell alot of domains, but then I don't register names intending to sell them. However you can use that method to figure out if the person is serious. If they want you to be first to talk about pricing, then make it really high. If they don't respond then they were just fishing.
