Domain extensions advantages/disadvantages

I was doing a little research to start a site and was looking for a keyword-domain name.

I see that .com are all catch but many .net and .org domain names are free.

I don't know very well SEO difference to choose .com or .org domain...can you please explain me or point me?

I personally feel domain name is effective in country specific search.Otherwise I could not find any remarkable effect.I am saying this from my personal experience.

I should end up that .com is the only way to get type-in traffic.
