Country TLD's can they make you dominate SERP's in some countries?

.us, .ky can these help you?

Why were TLD's such as these invented in the first place. I have a Cayman website, will having a .com.ky TLD or a mysite.ky help in ranking for people searching for a particular keyword in that country.

Do these domains actually have any thing to do with ranking in the major search engines?

This is more a SEO question than a domain question.

From what I've read a ccTLD hosting within a given country may be given weight to country specific searches, as per the 'button' on Google in the case of Google.co.uk.

The reason Webwork why I ask this question is to truly determine the value of a domain. Lets say for instance. A domain mysite.co.uk is a great type in name. Such as say a football club in the UK. Now if the search term is that football teams name and the TLD is co.uk, even though the .com holds the number one spot, is it reasonable to think that eventually the .co.uk will be delivered more by the SERPS eventually. Is this the edge that webmasters now need to run over the competition?

This means that choice of domain name must be predicated not only on type in, but where the traffic comes from and hence even if there is a .com it might be better to get the ccTLD as a matter of initial SEO.

It is a Pity that Google and or Yahoo does not provide the demographics for searches for a search term. They do have these figures but I am yet to see them anywhere in a Tool or otherwise?

This thought may change the logic in Domain name Management and SEO too.

Any thoughts
