I do an A record query using "http://www.mydomain.com" and i get this in return:
_____________________________________________
DNS server handling your query: localhost
DNS server's address:127.0.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:www.mydomain.com
Address: 206.27.17.62
_____________________________________________

That IP address is WRONG!... that is the IP address of where the site used to be hosted.

Now, when i remove the WWW and do a query of "http://mydomain.com" i get this:

______________________________________________
DNS server handling your query: localhost
DNS server's address:127.0.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:mydomain.com
Address: 72.52.139.91
_____________________________________________

That IP address is the CORRECT one with the new hosting company...

can anyone explain why this would be?

It sounds like whoever updated your DNS settings when you moved didn't properly update the settings.
