Acronym and Initialism Domain

Is it unwise to build on this?

Recently I purchased a domain that was expiring that included a popular 3 letter acronym and a keyword often used in my industry. (Something like ABCkeyword.tld) It's short, easy to spell, sounds good phonetically, and was $60 at auction.

To those in my industry just saying the acronym ABC would typically trigger thought of a popular organization in the industry. I imagine saying "ABC" in the TV industry would have the same result.

Outside of my niche there are hundreds of groups using the same acronym, but obviously not with the keyword applied. If someone were to say the name of the organization I would think of this domain I picked up, but I'm a domain guy and it may be just how I think.

Not looking to fool people but my gut says there is direct type in traffic for this term. Before I proceed in developing any real estate wanted to get your thoughts.

Better make sure that big organization hasn't trademarked their acronym first.

Did a quick search. Over 150 records recorded for the acronym, spanning many different industries. Most appear to be word marks or service marks. Acronym+keyword returns no results.

Acronym+keyword returns no results

Acronym+keyword isn't what matters.

Has the company trademarked their acronym itself for use in their industry?

The standard advice: don't take free legal advice from non-lawyers on a technical bulletin board. See an attorney who practices in this field.

Which is it?

If saying the acronym triggers thought of a popular organization in the industry, aren't you trying to capitalize on their name and reputation?

Thanks jtara,

That's the info I needed.
My gut says yes to the last question so I'm going to look at other options.
