Will Available Domains Ever "Run Out"?

What is the rate of registration?

System: The following 2 messages were cut out of thread at: http://www.webmasterworld.com/domain_names/3366190.htm [webmasterworld.com] by webwork - 4:55 pm on June 17, 2007 (utc -5)

To take this topic in a little different direction...

Does anyone know of any reliable data on the current registration rate for domains by the day, week, or month? Even more importantly, has anyone come across data indicating the decreasing availability of domains and proposed solutions?

I know that the second question is difficult to answer because any 99 letters garbled together will be available, but there must be some sense from those in the know, how the domain shortage is going to play out...

Domain tasting occurs predominantly in .com and .net this can mean huge swings of often +/- 2 Million domains a day

Looking at .org & .info for increases in the total number of registration (New - Deletes)

This week Sun - Sun .org 4977 .info 76891
Last week Sun - Sun .org 36598 .info = 54132

There's an interesting June 2007 1.3 mb .pdf from Verisign listing all the major domain registrations:

[verisign.com...]

Briefly:

Top Level Domain (TLD) registration growth reached 31 percent year-over-year, and 6 percent over most recent quarter

Country code TLD (ccTLD) growth of 33 percent year-over-year, and 5 percent quarter-over-quarter

New ccTLD registrations were up 86 percent year-over-year

10.7 million total new registrations worldwide in Q1 2007

Total worldwide base of 128 million domain name registrations

7 million registrations for new .com and .net domain names in Q1 2007

Smarsh,

It is very wrong for you to think that Domain Names may one day run out. In fact, as more and more domain extensions become available, the number of available domain names increase exponentially. There are literally hundreds of different extentions available today and who knows how many more will be available in a few years from now. It's not too hard to get single dictionary words with some extensions.

Even if we only had one extension available today, there would still be millions of free domain names, that is of course, as long as you didn't mind calling your shiny new website www.wndngfc6f74hfbvgfyru8r85.com.

The US is mainly dot com but many other countries have a strong use of ccTLDs

England - co.uk
India .in or co.in
China .cn
Japan .jp
Korea .kr
France .fr

If you are in the US you hardly see these extensions but if you are outside the US you realize there are options.
