Posted this a few mins ago but it's vanished.. maybe I did something wrong, oh well, here goes again but without the IP or real domain name.

The site works fine for me but I get emails from people telling me they cannot access the site, and when I put the IP directly into the browser I get a page cannot be displayed.

I run a few sites and some sub domains on the host.

This is how the DNS looks with RegisterFly

mail CNAME mydomain.com.
@ Address 1.2.3.4.5.6
* MX Record mydomain.com. 10
mydomain.com. Address 1.2.3.4.5.6
www Address 1.2.3.4.5.6
sub.mydomain.com Address 1.2.3.4.5.6
sub Address 1.2.3.4.5.6

Am I doing something wrong? Many thanks for your help

You may want to run a DNS Report on that domain and see if everything is in order. If you get any FAILS then there are potential issues.

I'd forward that DNS Report to your host for review and action if needed.

You may want to do some TraceRoutes too. Actually, if you can get one of the users who report no access to do a TR, that would help. There could be an upstream cache issue. Did you make any changes recently in the DNS?

Great stuff, thank you for your help.

I moved to a new server a few months ago, which is when I started receiving emails saying some could not connect to the site.

I have very limit knowledge of DNS but have run a report and forwarded the URL to RegisterFly.

Here's the FAILS but have no idea what they mean or how to fix them:

FAIL:
Missing (stealth) nameservers
You have one or more missing (stealth) nameservers. The following nameserver(s) are listed (at your nameservers) as nameservers for your domain, but are not listed at the parent nameservers (therefore, they may or may not get used, depending on whether your DNS servers return them in the authority section for other requests, per RFC2181 5.4.1). You need to make sure that these stealth nameservers are working; if they are not responding, you may have serious problems! The DNS Report will not query these servers, so you need to be very careful that they are working properly.

ns2.mdnsservice.com.
ns3.mdnsservice.com.
ns1.mdnsservice.com.
This is listed as an ERROR because there are some cases where nasty problems can occur (if the TTLs vary from the NS records at the root servers and the NS records point to your own domain, for example).

FAIL:
Missing nameservers 2
ERROR: One or more of the nameservers listed at the parent servers are not listed as NS records at your nameservers. The problem NS records are:
dns1.registerfly.com.
dns2.registerfly.com.
dns3.registerfly.com.

FAIL:
No NSs with CNAMEs
ERROR: dns1.registerfly.com. has a CNAME entry (dns1.registerfly.com.->ns1.mdnsservice.com.); it is not valid to have a CNAME entry entry for the hostname in an NS record (for dns1.registerfly.com.). See RFC1912 2.4 and RFC2181 10.3 for more information.
ERROR: dns2.registerfly.com. has a CNAME entry (dns2.registerfly.com.->ns2.mdnsservice.com.); it is not valid to have a CNAME entry entry for the hostname in an NS record (for dns2.registerfly.com.). See RFC1912 2.4 and RFC2181 10.3 for more information.
ERROR: dns3.registerfly.com. has a CNAME entry (dns3.registerfly.com.->ns3.mdnsservice.com.); it is not valid to have a CNAME entry entry for the hostname in an NS record (for dns3.registerfly.com.). See RFC1912 2.4 and RFC2181 10.3 for more information.
Note: This test checks with our local DNS server (since the NS record hostnames may not be handled by your DNS server), and therefore may be cached.

FAIL:
MX Category
ERROR: I couldn't find any MX records for rinf.com. If you want to receive E-mail on this domain, you should have MX record(s). Without any MX records, mailservers should attempt to deliver mail to the A record for mydomain.com. I can't continue in a case like this, so I'm assuming you don't receive mail on this domain.

FAIL:
Connect to mail servers
ERROR: I could not find any mailservers for mydomain.com.

There's a few WARNs aswell but it says they are minor problems. Many thanks again for your help.

After reviewing your DNS Report, I'd say there are some problems with the DNS settings. Those first three FAILS are where the issues are. The second two have to do with your MX Records (mail).

dns1.registerfly.com.
dns2.registerfly.com.
dns3.registerfly.com

Are you sure those should be dns1/dns2/dns3 and not NS1, NS2 and NS3? Get rid of the preceding d?

The dns2/dns3 was copied and pasted from the report, I don't know what NS2 and NS3 is or how to change it.

I'll send a request out on my mailinglist for someone to do a TraceRoute and I've sent the report to RegisterFly, fingerscrossed.

Thanks again for your help,

When you moved to a new server, who changed the DNS Settings at RegisterFly?

Oh wait! Are you possible collateral damage from this?

I still think there are problems with the DNS settings. I'm not sure why you even have anything pointing to registerfly unless they are hosting your site?

It was my dad who changed it, he has a tiny bit more understanding of this stuff than I do.

Something isn't right. It looks like your DNS should be pointing to...

ns1.mdnsservice.com
ns2.mdnsservice.com
ns3.mdnsservice.com

Usually there are only two entries but you do have an option to add more.

It looks like Dad left the DNS entries for RegisterFly in there too? I don't think they should be there. Or, the mdnsservice.com entries shouldn't be there.

It's a bit confusing, eh? And then you have me adding to the confusion. The DNS Report is a telltale sign that there are problems in the DNS configuration for your domain.

lol yep it is a bit confusing.. I just had a look in RegisterFly account and can't find an option to make those changes.

I must seem like a real retard!
