Backorder blues

There was this certain domin name that was expiring and I backordered it with the same registrar where it was originally registered.

Still they failed to capture it when the pendingdelete period was up and it went to another regisrar.

Is this normal? I´m wondering how hard they really tried, I mean they were holding the domain name, how can they loose it to a competitor, unless it wasn´t?

If it's the registrar I think it is, then they are notorious for a lousy backordering service. Probably they don't actually have a back-ordering team, just a back-order bank account for you to donate into. I've given them a few such 'donations'. Based on stories like yours, I've taken additional precautionary measures with names I care about with a *real* dropcatching servic.

Yes this does sound ridiculous, I know, but it's a fact that when a domain enters Pending Delete status and drops, it's a free-for-all on first come, first served basis for any registrar to register the name at the registry.

Most registrar's ToS would allow them to intervene and renew a domain before it enters Pending Delete status, but once it's in Pending Delete it WILL delete from the registry after 5 days. No if or buts. It looks to me like a glitch in their system, and it would be worth pointing that out to them.

Update: After having recieved a mail 4 days ago that said the registar failed to capture the domain name I got another mail today that said they had noticed a change, the domain name had been transfered back from the assumed competitor to the registrant I backordered with (and who held it originally). I was livid and suspected a scam so I used a whois lookup tool to see who had got it. And the new owner is ... me!
Still haven´t got a "domain name capture successful" mail yet but it show´s up in my account. I´m quite happy about this but even more mystefied in regards to how the world of domain name registering works.

4 Days! Perhaps a little domain tasting on the part of the assumed competitor :)

Evaluate your domains for approximately 4 1/2 days and decide if you want to keep them by simply selecting “Keep” in the Domains in Evaluation interface. If you do not explicitly keep a domain it will be deleted per the Time Remaining shown. You can also choose to delete a domain in advance of the delete schedule by selecting “Discard”.

I have a very good idea of who you used for the backordering. They are very good at monitoring domains. So if it was tasted and dropped, they invariably capture the domain. I still think it's worth you asking why your backorder didn't work originally, but I don't expect you'll get an intelligible(?) reply.

I use a very reputable name for registering domains, but i wouldnt use them for back ordering because they could`nt catch a cold.

If i was to backorder a domain i would use a company i know are quick and crafty, and then when they captured the domain i would move it back to my reputable registrar....maybe this is what happened?
