To avoid forum spamming by registrars and other issues we don't allow "recomment a registrar" posts. Take a look at the Domain Forum Charter for an explanation.
I'm certain you will easily be able to find an abundance of Aussie registrars simply by performing a search in Google for "domain names" or "register domain name" or "register .au domain".
Read the TOS. There's cheap domain registrations and then there's pricing that is so low that a registrar can only make a profit by attaching other strings, such as added cost services and a domain name lock up. (You can't transfer away without paying a fee.)
The limited number of Registrars for Aussie Domains are listed on the AUDA page here [auda.org.au], in random order.
With the restrictions on registering .au's here, and also on what the registrars can and cannot do, there is less likely to be any dodgy business going on as wioth other less regulated TLDs. For example, each application needs to be manually checked against various databases such as business names and trademarks to ensure no rights are being transgressed. Also, any loop-holes that are found in the rules and regulations are plugged fairly quickly to maintain an even playing field.
The registrars I and clients have dealt with have all given very good service which seems not to be a factor of price.

Be mindful of offers such as "free domain with hosting". Read all the terms of the deal before clicking "buy".
Woz, thanks for the pick up.
