does it matter whether you have a .com, .net or .org for your website when trying to establish visibility within search engines?

Thanks for any input.

No, .com, .net or .org are no determinative of a search ranking outcome, as far as I have ever been able to determine.

Of late the discussion has been about 'trust rank' where websites are evaluated for external (web community) and internal (website developer) signals of authority and trust.

Anything that can be 'gamed' will always be a target of filters. Anything that looks like it can be gamed will be targeted by SEO, which in turn will beget further filtering efforts.

Take a long look at the following thread. It's a WebmasterWorld gem.

I'm concerned that my .com site a few days ago disappeared from the 1st pages of Google in the UK for dozens of search terms..

Curiously if I search from Google nz or Google au or other English Google it's as usual but if I search Google in the UK web or UK results we're gone for now....It's virtually, only .co.uk in the results.

I have a similar sounding domain with .co.uk extsn should I attach that one...will it help?

I know there is a similar thread on this topic elsewhere but this is a fresh problem.

I'll just say that if your target market is the USA, perhaps you should make sure that you site is hosted on an American IP
