If I understand your question correctly the answer is "no, you cannot name your own dot com". No registration of a .com TLD = no root and zone file additon/update "for your domain" by Network Solutions. Address matching (your server's IP address to a dot com domain) requires registration and addition to the zone files, which are updated by the central registry for the TLD. In the case of dot com domains the central registry is maintained by Network Solutions.

Actually the .com registry is run by VeriSign. VeriSign sold off majority ownership of Network
Solutions more than a year ago. ;)

So NetSol's on "equal footing" with other registrars, in a manner of speaking.

freeonmyown:

You have no rights to, nor use of any domain name until it is REGISTERED
with some Domain Registry service, one recognized by ICANN if I have that right.
The registry could be anything from Network Solutions to GoDaddy and much in between.

Once you have that nailed down, you go to your registrar and POINT your domain to
any host you hire, even your own server(s) if they are online with unique DNS numbers.
How you get DNS #s assigned I simply don't know. Never tried it.

Having a box in the den or garage doesn't give you title to any domain name. -Larry

You're right davezan but due to early domain trauma I'm unable to separate the two.
