Hi,

I'm a newbie and I've looked around but can't see this specific problem in the forum but I'm sorry if I am repeating something.

My client was given a .com domain and site a couple of years ago but has had problems with the host/designer and has zero traffic. She has decided to have the site redesigned and relaunched by myself which is fine.

The designer also appears to be almost impossible to contact or get a response from and registered the domain in their own name. I have got them to transfer it to her name, however by the time that was done it was in clientTransferProhibited & clientUpdateProhibited and is now within a month of expiry.

When it expires we want to transfer it to a different domain registrar account e.g. 123-reg of her own in her name but my client hasn't had anything from the registrar about renewing the domain.

I am nervous about what will happen when it expires-especially as I'll be away on holiday when it does so (doh-rubbish timing!)

Is there anything I can do to ensure it all goes as smoothly as possible?

When you say the domain is transferred to her name, what do you mean exactly? Is it in an account at the registrar which she controls? Or has the former designer simply changed the whois record to her name, but still in their account?

The first thing I would do immediately is to have her open an account with the same registrar and ask the former designer to push the domain into her account. That way, she controls the domain.

If it's your intention to change registrars, you should do that now, and not wait for the domain to expire. If it's a co.uk domain I can't say, but if it's .com you will need to 1) Unlock the domain, 2) Ensure the Admin Contact email address is valid, 3) Obtain the Auth/EPP Code from the existing registrar, 4) Place a transfer order at your preferred registrar, 5) Approve the transfer request email sent to the Admin Contact email address 6) Wait between 5-10 days for the transfer to complete.
