I just looked up a domain name that I like, and it says it's in redemption period. What are the chances that it will hit the open market and be available for purchase?

Very low.
If the domain has any value, is being metered by the hosters/registrars. In such case it will be backordered.

If the name is one that you really, really want, put a back order on it and consider using more than one service to do so. Decide how much the name is worth to you and don't hold back hoping you might be able to get it cheaper. That might give you a fighting chance to get it, although the outcome would depend who else was interested and why.
Others might be able to suggest other strategies, but the above has worked for me a couple of times.
The bottom line here is that if you just wait and watch what happens, you won't likely get a chance at the domain. You have to take action, now.

I appreciate the info.
I don't have any immediate use for the domain and I'm currently crunched for funds (just graduated college) so I don't feel compelled to backorder.
Anyway, the domain is now "pending delete"... is that a good sign?
