Subdomain vs. new domain

Is there a disadvantage to using a subdomain

I have a domain hosted with a general name. I have several subdomains off of it selling different products which are doing quite well. I am getting ready to add another product totally different which needs its own site.

Using a subdomain will be the esiest by far. The name will go well with my general root name and I can use the same host and shopping cart setup.

My question is this: In the long run, is there really any disadvantage to going the subdomain route I haven't thought about? (Besides perhaps name recognition...www.widgets.com vs www.widgets.name.com. But I could not get widgets.com anyway. It would have to be something like ourwidgets.com, etc.)

So before I get started on the new site, should I just stick with the subdomain I can set up? Or should I register a new name and host it on its own and just plan to point the order page back to my current shopping cart?

Thank you

How about the old "don't put all your ecommerce eggs in one domain basket" argument against expanding using a single domain?

On the other hand...Isn't it better since engines will spider just one site? Why put a new site through the whole SEO process again?
