Want to be able to access your machine anytime, anywhere? Can’t be bothered purchasing a domain name and configuring Dynamic DNS? Microsoft has a solution: the "Windows Internet Computer Name" -- a unique domain name for your computer.

Oh dear, looks like the MSFT marketing droids have been at it again.

You do NOT need to "purchase a domain name" to use dynamic DNS. In fact, you do not need to spend anything at all to use dynamic DNS - there are several free providers. Oh, and most routers support this already. And you don't need IPv6.

MSFT seems to have reinvented the wheel, except their wheel is now square and won't work with your existing vehicle... or on any current roads.

Apart from that, neat idea.

Can anyone offer a short non-technical explanation of what this is about?

Am I not already able to access my PC from anywhere so long as I set up the right permissions and the PC is connected to the internet?

Is this really an advance and, if so, how?
