let's say that creditcards.com (or any other very generic two word name) is a trademark. Do they have legitimate claims over creditcard.com, .net or similar-word.whatever?

I doubt they would, as they registered the domain name as it is, and that doesn't give them the same rights as if they had registered "domain." Actually, the only reason they were able to get a trademark is the fact that they registered the generic-name.com as a whole. Am I missing anything?

There are various decisions involving domain names with a one character or phrase difference that still resulted in the domain names being transferred. It's just a matter of who's RAW (Ready, Able, Willing) to demonstrate their claims and meet the standards set, and whose side carries more weight.

These disputes are fact-intensive, so how one turns out doesn't necessarily dictate how another will be concluded.
