Hi, I have a subdomain on my main site, however I also registered a domain with the same name as the subdomain to stop it being taken. Although I only use the subdomain, all new material is published there, it can also be reached if the domain is typed into a browser.

This would seem to appear to Google as a mirror site with duplicate content, which is not the intention. Is there any way to turn off the domain without people getting a 404 or will it not be a problem?

Put the content on one or the other, and use a 301 permanent redirect to send visitors from the unused address to the active one.

That's not only the 'correct'; way to do it, it's really the best way, too. And it's s simple matter for your host to set up for you, if you cannot, or do not have the necessary access.

Hi thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure that Google wouldn't penalise me for having a redirect. As I had been in trouble once before when I wasn't aware that putting a topic for an article on one site that led to the article on my other related site, (both subdomains of the same site) I didn't want to go through that again.

Thankyou for taking the time to put me right.

Sorry to bother again. I have just been to my CP and I can only do a permanant redirect on my main site. The others are only listed as add-ons and the redirect doesn't give you the option of temporary or permanant. I assume the redirect is a temporary but I have no way of knowing.

Contact your host support; they should be able to do it for you without any problems - do check your wording, else they may get it backword :(

Hi, if anybody is still reading this.

I contacted my web host, they pointed me to a site that suggested redirecting using .htaccess.

It looks a little scary for me, but does anybody know if this is going to be ok and not cause problems with the Googleman.

Thanks Dominique

Help, any body out there?

I just did a redirect using a 301 in a .htaccess file but all I got was a 500 error message.

What could I have done wrong?

Hi there Ballada

Post your question in the Apache board, and title it "301 redirect problems" or something like that
