Difference between Domain Name and Hosting?

Trying to figure out how to buy...

I have an available domain that i am planning on buying, however, most of the registration sites that i am seeing offer only buy & host options.

i already have the server, the router, SDSL line, IP addy, etc to get the website up and running. from a hardware side, i could launch the website as just an IP address tomorrow.

however, since its a little cumbersome to tell someone "hey come visit my site at IP address ###.##.###.##. <snip/faux IP number>.

I need to figure out how to get rights to the domain name, while still being able to host everything myself.

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

[edit reason] Please just say "an IP number" or use ###.##. [/edit]

Hi frenchie. Welcome to WebmasterWorld.

Just use any of the major domain registrars to register a domain. You don't have to buy hosting. If you don't have a server already set up with DNS you may have to use the registrar's default DNS for awhile.

When you are ready to host you'll want a fixed IP address. That's the challenge. Will your ISP offer you a fixed IP? Will you run a fat pipe to your house, with all the server security provisioning, and get an IP address for that T-1 line? That's all up to you.
