What is the deal with .mobi?

How is it that there are already domains taken?

Why is it that there are top domains already taken when we haven't even hit the landrush yet?

I know the trademark stuff... but these domains are not trademarkable.

What is the deal?

From Wikipedia:

Starting May 22, 2006 industry members can register a .mobi domain name, June 12 for trademark holders, and Sept. 26 general registration. [en.wikipedia.org]

I am guessing that industry members may have been able to grab up desirable names back in May.

Yes Dan, I understand the schedule and the trademark... but what I am talking about is non-trademarked terms.

What I see in the WhoIs is:

Trademark Name:Premium Name
Trademark Country:IE
Trademark Number:Premium Name

those domains which you are taking are with mtld only ,thats why mentioned premium domains , you can apply for premium domains , but all are distributed in the order of trademarks and first come basis

Yes, but what I'm saying is that "industry members" may have been able to get those premium names. Wikipedia doesn't say that industry members were limited to registering their trademarked names.

I don't know for certain what the case is, but what I imagine as a possibility is that industry members were able to register any name they wanted back in May. So, whether they wanted TrademarkedCompanyName.mobi or PremiumDomain.mobi, they may have been able to register it.

I see benevolent001 and I were responding at the same time, and I'm not the faster typist. ;-)

That makes sense too...

I don't have mobile texting, so I think you might have an advantage over me there. ;-)
