Dropping a Yahoo domain

How do I do it?!

Geez, what a pain.

Just what the subject says - how do you - SUCCESSFULLY - drop a Yahoo domain?

(A word to the wise - Yahoo doesn't give you a choice to NOT auto-renew your domains. You have to explicitly drop them. Not sure if you can just give invalid or no credit card information.)

I went to the domain control panel, "Change or Cancel Plan", and jumped through all the hoops. Somewhat concerned about ambiguous language saying that I will "continue to be responsible for domain fees". (Apparently they mean for people whose domains are registered elsewhere...)

The domain was still listed on the control panel, but I figured on some delay, so wasn't too concerned.

24 hours later, it's gone from the control panel, but still in WHOIS.

Anyone know how long it takes to actually drop? Will it just continue until the expiration date? Can anyone confirm that this is right, and I won't be charged for a renewal?

I have several domain names I want to drop. The others I have at Yahoo I want to transfer to another registrar. I did this one as a test, based on my previous Yahoo experience - that one never knows just what to expect and it's best to test...

Problem is, I want to change all my registrations to a P.O. Box address. Now this one is hanging out there with my home address, and NO way to change it!

(I did have the forethought to change the address on my test case for transfer BEFORE initiating the transfer. After a few hours, the change WAS reflected in WHOIS. FWIW, changes made on my new registrar are reflected in WHOIS immediately.)

I want to get this done well ahead of the renewal date. I just KNOW they will somehow nick me if it gets close to the renewal date.

Regarding Yahoo's part of it, I have no idea.

Regarding the domain name, it will not drop out of WHOIs until after its expiration date. If you pay for a year, it's registered for the full year, whether or not you decide to continue using it.

If you have any worthwhile domains, you might try selling them rather than just letting them drop. If you don't, the registrar likely will, so you might as well see if you can get anything out of them.

LOL, if they were worthwhile, I wouldn't be dropping them. :)

I got a bug a while back about doing some "cute" things with .us and .at domains, that could be read with the TLD as a word. I went a little overboard with the concept. I'm keeping some of them, but dropping the hyphenated versions, and some of the more far-out unlikely ones.

If anybody has experience with the Yahoo side of this, I'd like to hear about it. I assume I won't be charged, since the domain is no longer listed in the control panel, but I'd like to be sure. I'll make sure that I change the address/phone number in the rest of them before I drop them.
