I was wondering if, when I cancel a hosting subscription, does the site itself cease to exist? However the domain name will still be available, to be attached to another site, as long as it is still registered? And will the domain name no longer be associated with the old site?

When you cancel a hosting subscription, typically the host will delete the site's directory and files from their server.

The domain can be used elsewhere. Many registrars will let you point it to an under construction page or point it to a new site. But, if you are moving to a new web site with a new domain, you really want to do a 301 redirect from the old site to the new.

The only exception to the above paragraph might be in a situation where the domain name registration service was included in the hosting. Then it will depend upon whether the domain name was registered in your name or the web host's name.
