Does a domain name make a difference when doing a search? Can a domain name increase the credibility of a site? Are there any figures on these topics?

Thanks

Search engine algorithms place some emphasis on keywords in domains, albeit small. In terms of credibility, which one do you think has more credibility?

widgets.tld
-- or --

In terms of hard statistics on the matter, I don't think it's necessary. The market for $1K+, $10k+ and $100k+ domains indicates that owning keyword domains is important.

thread continued from sticky for the benefit of other people with similar questions.....

I see little value in that domain name. It is neither a commonly used generic term nor a brandable name. The topic of the domain appears to be informational and not ecommerce oriented.

Search engines are constantly changing. The point is not whether your domain can rank, but rather that there are few people searching for your topic that are going to spend money.

There are two different Point of View. One POV is that you build a site for something that you find interesting and visitors and profits will come. The other POV, which I strongly believe, is that you should build sites around something that people are looking to buy and try to capitalize on it.

Try using the following tool to see what people are looking for on the Internet. Keep in mind that there are some variations and that singular and plural results are lumped together and that word clusters sometimes appear in the wrong sequence.

[inventory.overture.com...]

Also, try looking up advertiser bids to get an idea of what toics you can monetize.

[uv.bidtool.overture.com...]
[adwords.google.com...] (account required)

Your sticky containing the URL is the correct way at Webmaster World to get more detailed answers. Please note that in general, you should not post links or drop names to other sites. There are a few exceptions, but they are all authority sites. Keep reading the forums and you will have a better idea of what is acceptable.

Not really an SEO guy, but my uninformed opinion is ...

I know someone with domains that are basically nonsense words that rank in top-3 in google for non-competitive phrases. I don't think it would be any different for competitive phrases.

I don't think domain name carries much weight at all with the engines except in one sense - any time someone puts a link to you on their page, your keywords are there even if they just list the url.
