Is .gs ccTLD domain worth it?

I want to get one for a project website

I have a project idea for a website. It will be a user contributed content type website. The project name starts with letters "g" and "s", e.g. "Great Steak" (made up). Obviosly GreatSteak.com is already taken since 1995, but lots of awesome variations for .gs are still available.

I was wondering if it would be a problem with search engine rankings? Would Google, Yahoo or MSN devalue based on the ccTLD?

Google does not take that into account. Some might say it does because those sites don't seem to rank well. The reason sites like that don't rank so well is that often times those types of sites don't have as many links or quality links. I remember Brett wrote an article about that a long time ago. It is harder to get links when you have a weird domain or TLD. Even when people want to give you a link they will accidentally put .com instead of .gs or whatever. There is a block in a lot of people’s minds that non .com domains or very long domain names are not legit. Which translates into less links to those sites.

Thanks wmuser and ogletree. I see what you mean about the block, you tell a person example.net and they immediately type in www.example.com. But you had a choice of

a) WidgetKeywordBlue.com
b) WidgetKeyword.WK
c) or even Widget.Wk

Which one would you pick?

If this is a real site and you want people to spend time their and come back get a .com. Anything else and your going make life much harder. Even if it is a made up word. Make sure your word is spelled the way is sounds.

I don't think there is any such block on .org and .net domain names.

There is not a block on .net and .org but you still get people typing in the .com and linking to the .com.
