You can look for US trademarks here [uspto.gov...]

Thanks for that but the .com site is based in Denmark and sells Worldwide. It already has.com and .net of my domain name and I wondered why it did not purchase .co.uk when it was available 5 years ago

Depends on the nature of the name whether its something like lego rather than something more generic like orange.

If its something that obviously belongs to a single company then the best solution would be to let it drop or give it to the company.

Why would they consider .co.uk when they already have the .com and .net (and probably .dk) if they are selling worldwide?

Apart from the financial side why do sites selling domains advise people to buy ALL domains available to protect them later if their site takes off.

Because they want to sell domains? It's basically to protect your brand in every available market.

I think for most circumstances you don't need to buy all the ccTLD's just because you are selling worldwide. If you have presence in each country, then yes.

$10 a year is often cheaper than taking the names of cybersquatters

Because they want to sell domains?

Never let it be said ;)

If you wish to use anything other than the .com, then buying other domains is quite important;

It stops cybersquatters, MFA and porn sites leeching your income and reputation.

However, if you buy (and use) the .com, your need is not so great, as you hold all the aces. Buying other domains is not so important for income and reputation protection, but is a good way to keep your options open for the future (eg .net and selected country domains).

NEVER bother with .biz or .info, if you have the .com - you'll never need them (not until the sun burns out, anyway), and it'll keep a spammer off the streets for ten minutes.

Protecting copyright and trademarks is important, but may be considered separately - the dates you set up are a matter of record, so will not be an issue.
