European ccTLD domain registration practices

Contacted by someone looking to sell our company a domain name

I was wondering how domain name registrations worked in Europe. I have been contacted by someone who is with a registrar in Great Britain about purchasing a domain name with the .md extension. It happens to be the name of our company, but is also a common term. I have researched this and verified he works for this registrar. He is also listed as the registrant in the whois. He wants my company to make an offer on this domain and says he is marketing the .md extension in the states.

This seems very shady to me because this would be like Network Solutions contacting me and asking if I wanted to make an offer for xyz.com. By doing this they obviously are expecting more than the standard price for the domain.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this? Is this standard practice with European or International domains?

They're in business and trying to make money by selling you, possibly, an over-priced name.

Do you have any specific requirment for a Modovian name?

I'm contacted regularly by US companies trying to sell me names, this is nothing new.

If you require a European name why not consider .eu? They're readily available.

I can understand if it was a domain broker or other company wanting to sell me a domain. Since this company is a registrar that is not allowed in the U.S.. A registrar, like Network Solutions, cannot purchase domain names themselves and then auction them off or take bids for them. They can simply sell the domain names, but NEVER own the domain names they sell.
