"Status: Locked"

I'm new to the purchasing domains world, so excuse my ignorance. Basically, the infamous 'register.com' owns the domain I want. While I have an alternative ready for purchase, I'd rather chase that one and see what I can get, no for re-sell, but as a site focused on a forum much like this.

So what does "Status: Locked" necessarily mean under a WhoIs lookup? Being the site they are, what's the chances I can pick it up? With that said, will they overcharge it's real value like they do with everything else?

I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance.

I did not know they were infamous?

Are you positive the owner is register.com? If they really own it plus are using it I doubt they would sell it.

Locked means it can no be transferred to a new owner or different registrar.

'status: locked' normally means that the owner is making the domain harder to steal. (There are cases of people asking another registrar to transfer a domain that they do not own over, and it happened. These days you can 'lock' a domain and unauthorised transfers can't happen - in theory - you have to 'unlock' before a transfer, or similar actions, can proceed)
If you successfully negotiate with the owner then they will unlock it when the time for transfer comes.

^ at least it seems to be potentially obtainable, still.

trader, like I said, I'm new. I can't truly read the form, but this is where I'm getting my assumptions....

Not sure why you erased the image Registrant and Admin details. That is how you can tell who owns it and who controls it (in that order). The registrar information and tech contact (which you did not erase) tells you far less than the areas you obscured.

I don't know much about privacy laws, but I know forums are real testy with certain guidelines. I didn't want to just put another man's information on here. That's all.

The owner did respond early in the morning saying it would be a lump sum to purchase it. So I'm just going to see what he considers to be "lump" and go from there.

Good question. Not sure how the WW TOS comes into play involving an outside link to a Whois image.

Status Locked means that the name is locked at current registrar and cant be transfered away to another registrar.
