I already have the .com but need a second domain name for some reason. Is a telecommunications/internet site targeting a mainly US audience.

Do you think it would it be better to register domainname.net, domainname.us or domain-name.com?

Cheers :)

Personally, I'd choose domainname.us. But it depends on what the purpose of the domain is. If you want to use it for a name server or for other network-related stuff, than I'd probably use .net instead of .us.

Having two sites with different content, one at domainname.com and the other at domain-name.com, would seem somewhat strange to me.

If this is the case I would go with the domainname.net. It fits in well with telecom/internet sites.

Also, the biggest downfall of having the .net version is that most people will type in .com by habit. Since you also own the .com it won't be such a big factor.

I do agree with JohnCarpenter about avoiding the domain-name.com one.

I would register them all and then use the .us to target the US market.

It will work well too if you want to target other countries later.

I agree totally. Besides, domain names are really cheap nowadays. Everyone who owns a well-known .com domain should register at least the .net and .org variants, before some squatter does. We've had 2 such domains squatted, one was a .net variant (bought by two squatters in a row) and the other was a hyphenated .com variant.

The more you have invested in a site, the more it makes sense to own the same name in other TLDs.
