I haven't really paid any attention to the .ws domain untill tonight when I saw some up for sale in another forum the asking price looked quite cheap for what seemed to be good domains (one and two word domain)

So, I went to my registrar and started to look for domains relating to my business and found what I thought were some good domains and started to load my trolly, I even found that my common english FIRST NAME was still available and added that.

I'm just about to pay for them all and think "why are these still available?" and then realised I've never seen (or at least never noticed) a site with the .ws extention, so I empted the trolly apart from myname.ws

Is there a future in .ws?
Do non webmasters know about .ws?
Will the value of .ws domains rise?

.WS has 4 negatives, first the reg and renewal fee is higher than the major ext.

The next negative is they can not be transferred to a new registrar (as I am told by GoDaddy), meaning you are stuck at the same firm, a negative if your registrar raises renewal prices, or you ever want to consolidate your names (as I am trying to do now).

Lack of recognition by the public.

And finally (related to the above), no type-in traffic as virtually no one would ever type-in the .ws extension.

trader,

Thanks for your thoughts, Lack of recognition by the public was the thought that concerned me the most.

Note: Any domain that ends in two-letters is a country code. In this case, .WS was allocated to Western Samoa.

Some country registrars misuse and misrepresent the country code domains in an attempt to raise money. I know .WS has been promoted as "World Site" and "Web Site" but it really stands for Western Samoa.

Similar misused domains are .FM (Federated States of Micronesia), .TV (Tuvalu), .CC (Turks and Caicos), .BZ (Belize) etc.

Hi unperterbed.

Where did you find the .ws domain names for sale. Like you, I found? the .ws domain names and thought what a terrific find. Now from reading this thread, I think that I should either sell them to someone who really wants them or else just cancell them.
cheers - greg

Misused or an obvious marketing ploy of which they are taking a reasonable advantage?

.FM seems to be gaining ground amongst the radio station and .TV is definitely popular amongst marketing companies, and a few TV channels, in the UK.

I have no idea about elsewhere.
