Hi there - quite new to web design coming from a programming background. Would anyone be so kind as to give some pointers (url link or something) which explains difference between .co.uk. .com .biz etc. I usually do small sites and register a .co.uk address but one customer is asking my advice on having a .biz address - will it affect his ratings etc.

Any help much appreciated. (feel quite ashamed for not really not knowing this stuff)

As per my knowledge .biz stands for commercial sites only. Also, if you wanted to register a domain which is already used then you can get that domain name with .biz

However, it might not affect ratings.

I would never take a .biz seriously

Generally, Google does not distinguish between extentions in ranking a site and all gTLDs will be included in the google index most of which is shown on google.com

However it selectively displays gTLDs on local search
i.e. google.co.uk it will index all .co.uk's but only com, .info. .biz .net .org's (i.e. gTLDs) if they are hosted in the UK. A .biz hosted in Holland for example will usually not show up in the google.co.uk serps.
