i am planning to setup a online business. The name which is in my mind is already booked by someone in .com category. Can i go for .biz?

Is there any requirements for it? What does exactly .biz domain represent? Is there any particular advantage or disadvantage attached to this category?

I see it as a last resort category, exactly for the purpose to which you want to use it.

I don't see any advantages other than it gives you the opportunity to use a name that exists in other TLD's.

Beware you are not infringing on trademarks and registered names.

Personally I'd try and be creative with a dot com because I look at .biz domains as a tad tacky ... but that's my personal opinion and doesn't reflect you.

Please don't take this as a negative post, just my thoughts!

Peewhy, thanks for your opinion. I am not trying to use any established business name. There is nothing on that .com domain write now, but someone has registered it already. That person has this domain from last 2 years. He may have registered it for sale. Therefore I am looking for some alternative and .biz is one of them.

I'd try and buy the domain, but register your .biz for security.

Depends a lot on what you want to run on your site - some subject areas / categories would be fine on .biz - others may not work.

For example, if you were looking to setup a corporate website for a large company then .com is the really only option (and .co.uk, etc) - .biz just wouldn't look profressional.

I don't really like .biz to be honest though - sounds too much like a teenager text messaging. ;) Again, that could very well be appropriate for some websites and work well.

I am thinking too much before taking .biz because I myself had not seen many .biz websites.

Any comment on this is appreciated.

I agree that .biz domains just don't look professional. Personally, I'd go ahead and get the .biz ($5 at GoDaddy) for possible future use, and try to come up with another .com.

I'd never register a .biz for any use.

It confuses the less tech-savvy people when you start throwing around more than .com and .org. Most that I've run into are hazy about what .net is (and so am I at this point).

.biz? What's that? Is that like .bz? Sounds like a Mediterranean country's extension. Or a leftover from the booming bubble when "biz" was [wall]street for business.

.info - I think this one has some potential, but not for a business.

.us - .com is the U.S. extension. What next? .co.us?

Just spend a few hours or a few days writing down ideas for an unregistered .com.

You'll find that every single one of them is taken, except for the one you go with. This is a sign. Don't mess with fate.
