Hello,

I've been playing with registrars database quite a lot recently, and being a quite imaginative person, I now have a long list of cool and short domain names that aren't taken yet.

Do you think I should bother buying them and try to resell them? Or will it be useless?

What's your opinion? What would you do?

Look at the number of domains that have been registered that have subsequently been dropped. Last I checked the number of deleted domains was in the 25,000,000 range. That's a fair indication of how speculative registrations work.

My advice? Unless it's an industry keyword domain or a 2 word industry keyword phrase domain chances are you are dreaming.

It's the lottery mentality that drives a lot of registrations. If you've got money to burn you can play. If you don't then hold onto your money and invest it in something else more likely to yield a return.

Short and valuable: FreeWidgets.com

Short and stupid: Frigets.com (cross between 'free' and 'widgets').

You won't find many of the first type still available for registering. Playing with the domain name tools is still fun however. ;-)

I'd say imagination in the word. There are probably some really good domain names left,
hidden in the underbrush. I would be very selective and not cast a wide net to preserve capital. -Larry

If you've got the cash, I'd say go for it, but don't go wild. A good domain is a great buy under $10. You can't expect to turn it around quickly, but I've sold 2 domains without advertising. I just parked and waited a few months.

Thanks for all the replies :)

The main reasons why I was asking that reside in the fact that someone offered me 400 USD for <snip>.com, a domain I own. Also, I recently registered a cool six-letter one whose name triggers 0 result in google which, in my opinion, makes the future promotion better (what do you think?).

I have a list of others short and catchy domain names that I won't use for my sites ... so ... it might be a good idea to register a couple of them and see how it turns out.

Just as an anecdote, I saw a domain name in sale at 1 200 000 USD yesterday. Weird.

If you really think you got something, not currently registered, then spend $50 and register your favorite 6 or 8 names, and see what happens. Best way to learn, other than talking to others with experience.
