Benjamin Cohen, 22, registered itunes.co.uk in 2000, but earlier
this month the UK domain name registry, Nominet, handed the name
over to Apple.

Now that IS interesting. I wonder if anyone at Apple had even thought of the name iTunes that long ago.

This is amazing. I just read about it in the news and came to see if it was already posted on WebmasterWorld.

Earlier this month, domain name registry service Nominet ruled that Benjamin Cohen must hand the iTunes.co.uk name to Apple Computer. Although Cohen registered the name in November 2000, three years before Apple initially launched its online music shop of the same name, Nominet's dispute resolution procedure found in favor of the California company.

If you check the UK trademark office, you'll notice that Apple's application filing date actually
preceded the domain name's registration. See for yourself.

Thanks for that info davezan - it sort of cooks the whole thing. It also shows how long development cycles can be. Something like iTunes is certainly not trivial to plan and buildout.
