weakening of .edu standards?

I've noticed a trickle of .edu domains by other than four-year, degree-granting institutions. At least a few junior/community colleges have .edu domains, as does the venerable but entirely non-degree-granting Smithsonian Institution <[si.edu ]>.

Smithsonian actually does have some educational programs available, if I interpreted it correctly.

Do you think a site, regardless of actual official educational status, would need to have some sort of curriculum to legitimately use .edu?

BTW, I had an uncle who lived at the corner of President St. & Utica Ave. Ages ago!

Had no luck in finding the original story but I read that there has been some fundamental changes in which institutions are entitled to the .edu domain. I specifically recall that community colleges are now eligible.
