I am a little confused - a domain name I used very rarelty for a year or so - lapsed this december. I allowed it to lapse, so no issue here.

It is a long name, related to my tiny business, and really of no use to anyone. I found today that it had been purchased by someone in Russia and is now a portal to a porn site. I did some checking and it looks like this person has snapped up hundreds or thousands of expired domains - all pointing back to his XXX portal.

Is the point here to create thousands of links from a "good neighborhood" back to his site for SE placement? These front sites are loaded with a bizarre set of text that looks as if it is designed to fool search engines in some way.

I had several links in forums to the old domain I was able to go back and fix, and the damage here is light.

I guess the moral is you can never give up domain names anymore with this kind of nonsense happening.

A lot of people do this. It is a quick and easy way to get trafffic. Costs them $8 to hopefully get a few hundred / maybe thousands of hits

ha! .... he wasted his $8 bucks, I don't think there were more than 10 hits to that in the entire year.
