TLD, ccTLD ...

Which domains come under which category?

Hi everyone.

I'm a bit confused about TLDs and ccTLDs. As I understand, TLDs are domains like .com and ccTLDs are domains like .uk, but where would .co.uk or .com.au come under these categories.

Also, are there any restrictions to registering TLDs?

Thanks

gTLDs .com .net .org (.gov .edu .mil .int)

Newer gTLDs .info .biz (.museum .coop .name .pro .aero)

ccTLDs - Over 250 1 for each country
.uk .au etc

Some countries divide the second level up
co.uk .net.uk .org.uk .me.uk .ltd.uk plc.uk .sch.uk

other countris do not
.de .fr .es

Some countries used to restict the 2nd level

.county.state.us .co.in

and have recently allowed
anything.us and anything.in

Some countries have allowed their registries to be commercialised where their name could mean other things
.tv .cc .ws .la .nu

The restrictions vary you need to check for each TLD
