Transferring UK domain due to ripoff renewal charge

I registered a co.uk domain 2 years ago for about £6. Now the same company is asking £20+VAT for renewal! That's just a ripoff. I want to transfer my domain (still 1 month before expiry) to somewhere else where the prices are reasonable (anyone have any suggestions?).

Their website is not very clear. I've got 'Change DNS', 'Change Nameservers' and 'Change Nominet Tag'. I assume it's the latter option I must use. Can anyone recommend a good registrar for .co.uk and how can I find the 'Nominet TAG' they are asking.

What you need to do is the 'Change Nominet Tag', but you need to identify the new tagholder first.

Given their record of charging they will probably try and charge you a release fee.

Beware of registrars with low prices who charge hefty amounts of money for web/email forwarding or to transfer the domain away from them.

what ian said. I have a domain at a registrar I registered years ago, the registrars want a £40 release fee. If im desperate in the future, I will move but for the time being they can keep dreaming.

Why is Nominet changing its procedure regarding disputed tag changes?

Under the original tag change procedure, there were a handful of disputed cases where Nominet would not make a tag change - for example, in some cases where there were outstanding fees between the registrant and tag holder and the tag holder claimed a lien. However, following legal advice, it became clear that it was no longer appropriate for Nominet to act in this way. Therefore, under the new procedure Nominet will act on the instruction of a registrant to make a tag change regardless of whether there is a dispute between registrant and tag holder. It will be up to the tag holder to pursue their customer for any outstanding debts.

Nominet fee is £15 to manually change a tag.
