European Domain names

I have a client who currently operates in the UK and is looking to develop websites for the French, German, Italian and Spanish markets. They want to operate using the country specific domains such as companyname.fr.

I understand you need to be trading in the countries in question in order to register a .fr .de, .es domain? As the company at present only operates in the UK, it there a way around this?

Is another alternative registering a European Trademark? I have been advised that this would be good enough for each of the authorities. Can anyone offer any advice on this?

Your client can register all of those domain names through a proxy service

There are proxy services for France, Spain and Germany.
