Leasing a domain

anything to watch out for?

I have a 3 word 7 letter generic domain name that gets about 3-4 requests per month from people interested in buying it. I would probably sell it for $10,000, but nobody has come near that yet.

Anyway, today got an email from someone who is interested in buying or leasing the name.

I'm doing nothing with the domain so wouldn't mind leasing it.

Question 1: How much to charge? I was thinking $600 for the year.

Question 2: Do I need to worry about them getting a trademark or something on the name, or claiming squatters rights after they've used it for a year or two?

How much type in traffic does it receive? Can it be monetized? If you don't know these things you should investigate before leasing the name. You may discover that you could easily make $600 per month - or more.

For those who lease out their domains, how do you prevent the devaluation of your domain, if the domain is linked out to bad neighborhoods and gets penalized by the search engines?

I've been offered $150 per month for a one year contract for the lease. Now I need to figure out the fine print.....

Does it have any Google PR? People pay over $150 a month for a simple text link on site with PR (6+). Also, if it's highly targetted and you can prove visitor stats then you may be able to earn a lot more by simply selling links on the page.

I bet that's what your rental partner is planning to do anyway.

not much type in traffic ( a few per week) and no page rank.

Take the money.

Yes, take the money as I don't think you will get your 10k for it.

I think eventually I could definitely get 10k for it, but I'd much, much rather lease it out for $150 per month for the next 40 years. :)

Actually, it's a lot more likely that after the first year I'd jack up the price so long as they were still using it.
