A week ago I bought a handful of domains (you know, one of those sleepless nights) which I fully intended on developing something - well a few days back I get a call from this lady asking me about one of them (the better one of the bunch I'd say) if I was interested in selling. She offered $200, I countered with $5000 - which was really pulled out of nowhere since i had no idea what prices go for these days(researching it some more in this forum suggests $5k is about right up there?)
Now, the interesting part - In my email box there was also an email from a guy who was inquiring about the same domain! I don't know if this is a company, or whatnot.
So anyway I sent the guy an email stating the price again, and that's it.
This was friday, today I just got a voice mail from the lady asking me to call her back (since I missed the call).
So, what can I expect from this? I'm assuming she's interested - a round of counter offers? is $5k too much for me to hold my ground on? the domain is of the type '<widget>geek.com' which is an awright name for an industry that's fairly saturated, so it's kinda of a catchy name if you want to truly build something there.
I gotta call the lady back, so any insights would be great!
Unfortunately, without the particulars, venturing an opinion is like quoting a price for a car without knowing its model, year or condition. Is it a Porsche or a 1972 Ford Pinto with optional exploding gas tank ;-)
I've sold and bought a bunch about $5,000. I've also bought a bunch <$100. Value reflects the quality (keyword, profitable niche) and the quantity (how popular is 'the word' in SE results?).
There are a few domain forums where you can post domains for appraisal purposes.
Did the person leave specific details like if she's representing a company?
No, but to that all I can say is that it was strange to be contacted by email from a guy and by her over the phone. It seemed to me like the whole decision needed to be run by other people as well.(i.e. not a solo enterprise). And if those two contacts were not from the same party, then why would there be a 'rush' to get that name?...
But I guess - $5k is a lot of money and at the top of the price list for most run of the mill domains - that's what I am getting from checking here.
The domain is '<widget>geek.com' for those who inquired about it (i.e. autogeek.com, radiogeek.com, etc). The field, I would say is as competitive as any, 8 million searches for the keyword?. It means nothing unless you're trying to brand your site, which is what I bought it for anyway.
Anyway, I'll give the lady a call and get the suspense out of the way :)
well I can say one reason is because the owner is attached to it, and they like the name ;) that's about it.
I can (and will) build a site around it that can net me exponetially more than the few $k's the sale of the domain would get me. Of course, I could also simply get another domain and do the site thing around it. But branding wise, it took me around 100 searches looking for available industry keywords that would sound and type nicely. I wouldn't think of buying a domain name from someone else because..guess..they'd be asking too much (ahha, guilty as charged!)
I think for most domain owners(my guiding factor) it's a matter of 'how bad do you want it?' and slap a price accordingly.
As far as websites, there's always some work of love involved there, and that gets quantified differently by the owner and by the prospective buyer.
I'd be curious to know which domain had the owner asking $500k for it(just a domain? big portal? one keyword?).
>>It would be very much appreciated.
Can some one post this as im sure a few people are interested if not can someone sticky me :) Ive not heard anything like that before...

So if you watch adult cartoons and see any promising new wrestler/actors out there, see if their names are available :-)
As far as negociations, this guy is a very shrewed businessman, the WWE probably opened with free tickets to the wrestling matches, you gotta hang tough ;-)
