I was toying with the idea of buying a 3 letter .com name but have no idea how much it would cost.
Any ideas

Would depend if it were a word or random type things.

Fairly random - no brand initials or anything like that

A two letters followed by a number .com, if lacking any major meaning, goes for $11-$66, with the average just under $20. A bit less if the number is the middle character.

These are actual sales prices from about thirty sales on one of the forum trading places in the past few months.

A letter followed by two numbers didn't even make $10.

Three letters was really variable - from $15 (seems like a bargain) to several hundred dollars.

So, there's no special value or premium just because it's only three characters.

The one I was looking at was fgd (not in that order). It seems to have been a fairly well established site for a number of years.

It's up for auction now and the last time I looked with 2 days to go it was at $2000.

I think I might give this one a skip!
May be one day.

KFZ is the german language acronym for "Kraftfahrzeug" = "Power vehicle" = "Automobile". No surprise the domain gets above average pricing.

You were talking just about a 3 letter domain. If it has traffic, PR, or means anything then it goes for a lot. $2000 is a great deal if it has any pr. All those things add up.

I have a few myself.

Right now, the bad ones go for $1k ish and the good ones are $3k+.

Something better would be $5k+
