dot-uk -- or dot-co-uk

What has a better commercial value?

Probably a silly question but I cannot find any information on the NET as to which is a more valuable extension and why, is it .uk or .co.uk?

The .uk domin is a term for .gov.uk .co.uk .ltd.uk .org.uk etc

There are one or two legacy .uk's left

www.parliament.uk for example but on the whole most of these have been cleaned up.

Therefore you can only register

.co.uk, .org.uk (& .net.uk)

there are others .ltd.uk .plc.uk, .sch.uk .ac.uk etc. but these are for restricted groups.

Very interesting, thanks for all your feedback, is that the .uk extension is off limits, or is that there just aren't any left? Does anyone know of a registrar that permits the .uk extension?

AFAIK, Nominet (the UK registry) only issue third level domains.

.co.uk is the UK equivalent of .com and is the most popular by far.

Dot UK is a TLD, Nominet control it and it is now prohibited to register a .uk domain name.

Before Nominet a very few select groups got one:

Parliament, MOD, British Library, National Library of Scotland and the worlds most powerful nuclear fusion reactor based in Oxford.

I only know of one private company that got one: A web designer in Newcastle who had the cheek to call himself The W3 Organisation and registered org . UK

Today it is a one page site his wife has just sold.

ltd.uk Private limited companies
me.uk Personal names
net.uk Internet Service Providers' infrastructure
org.uk Not-for-profit entities
plc.uk Public limited companies

while
ac.uk Higher and further education and research institutions
gov.uk National, regional, and local government bodies and agencies
mod.uk Military and related purposes
nhs.uk National Health Service
police.uk Police forces
.nic.uk Network use only
.sch.uk Schools
do exist, but arn't looked after by Nominet, plus oddities like parliament.uk
