For commercial sites, use:
In the USA use a .com
In the UK use a .co.uk
etc.
Exactly. I own a .org domain, and have a popular site about it. That .org is in the form of brandname.org, where brandname is a well known pharmaceutical. That site warns about the dangers of that pharmaceutical. I have a prominent disclaimer on the home page stating I am not affiliated with the pharmaceutical company, and is owned and run by an organization I control. I even have the top 2 spots on Google on the SERP for this trademark, ahead of the multibillion dollar drug company that owns the trademark. That multibillion dollar pharmaceutical company could have registered the .org long before me, and didn't. I doubt they would prevail at ICANN if the challenged this. And if they even tried, given this would would make front page of the Wall Street Journal, and other national media, I doubt they want to give me this attention. ;)
