Pricing a rare domain?

domain name glut

I've watched the sale of domain names go through a series of ups and downs. It appears that we've reached a point where very few companies need domain names anymore. Maybe business on the web has reached a plateau and is now declining?

I have a domain [2-letters].com that I've had for almost 10 years (someone stole it last year, but I managed to get it back). We've used the domain for a small company (I'm rebuilding the domain server right now), but we've reached the point that we are considering the offers we receive for it. My business partner believes a $30K offer might be fair. Our company doesn't need the money, but the usefulness of this domain has almost reached it's end.

Has domain names reached such a glut that owners should take anything they can get for them. Or is a 2-letter, top-level domain like this worth more?

Just looking for opinions...

It depends and that's the problem with WW when it comes to domains. It's hard to evaluate domains for any purpose without 'specifics' so the WW domain threads are really not that robust. I kills spam, but with domains it also hamstrings the discussion.

I suggest you hunt down domain name forums where they allow you to discuss the particulars. DomainState is one. There's others.

Understand that in domain forums they will offer 2 opinions re value: reseller and end user value.

A good 2 letter dot com can go for $$$,$$$. My.com was recently sold in that range to my recollection.

Check out DNJournal's archives for domain sales 'of record'. The vast majority of sales do NOT get reported and many would make their charts if they were.

P.S. Don't ask me to put a value on it. It's just one man's opinion anyways.
