Is it just as the domain expires, during the redemption period, or during the pending delete period? or any other?

Whenever you like. You can backorder a domain that's registered until 2010 - you're just not going to get it!

eerr... I don't get the funny part there :P
Well, what I actually meant was, when does the backordering company (whoever that might be) try to acquire the the domain. (I dont see any difference in backordering a domain that is registerd for 10 years, right now or just one day before it expires. that's common sense :D) So what I want to know is, exactly at what point does the registrar (the backordering company) attempts to get the domain? has anyone got a reasonable answer?

At the moment (the very fraction of a second) that it "drops" and becomes available. Usually the backordering companies know to within a couple of minutes, and their automated systems attempt backorders continuously during the drop "moment".

But my comment wasn't (purely) a joke - since some drop companies only allow one person to book a particular name, and some names are booked months and months in advance, "whenever you like" is an appropriate answer when looking at the customer side of the transaction.

Hi guys,

I believe the actual drop happens daily at 2pm Eastern Time, 11am Pacific. Hence the scramble. But perhaps you're trying to figure out on which day a domain will drop? I could pass you a link to a board with a lot of posts on this subjec, but I don't know if that's within the guidelines here...
