Register dot com's "Safe Renew" scheme

Why are they doing this?

I got sent a letter about this new service which is automatically enabled for people outside the US & Canada.

I know very well when my domain is going to expire, so I can't see any reason why they would set this up unless it was "safe" for their bank balance.

Thanks.

It automatically charges your credit card to renew your domain name when your domain is about to expire.

I don't like anything that has an automatic charge to my credit card.

Thanks.

It's a relatively common arrangement - and yes, it is a lot better for their pocket book if the customer action is only required for an opt-out rather than an opt-in.

I'd say if you're uncomfortable with it, certainly don't do it. Or make sure the original credit card you use doesn't work at renewal time ;)
