I've finally picked up an account to grab some of the domains that I thought may be useful. I've seen some very interesting ones already, and am excited to be exploring the world of domain name real estate.

I grabbed a snap account to pick up some of these domains, but am a bit concerned from reading previous posts that there may be some serious hoops to jump through.

One of my concerns was having to use THEIR registrars. Can I exchange the domain, and pick it up real quick through another registrar to make life easier than going through the transfer process? I've hated the process of transfer with some of the crappy registrars I've dealt with in the past, and a $7 reg fee is a lot nicer than $29.95 or whatever some of these are.

Any other tips people are willing to share to save me from future headaches?

There is no trouble in transferring the domain to a cheaper register. Some make it tricky to do but once you become familar with the particular register's control panel there should be no problem.
You cannot do it within 60 days of registering it though.

If it's a domain that you have to have then don't rely on just one service to grab it. There are a number out there that will increase you chances.

I've found that often, my name and address gets messed up either during the snap process (when the registering occurs), OR subsequently, when I try to transfer it to "my" registrar.

Often, I ended up with the fields all blank in the registrant fields.

Log in to edit the domain info right away to make sure your contact address is correct. (Unfortunately, some of the Snapnames-associated registrars have horrible user interfaces.)

Another tip: Use a very strong password, different from all other passwords you use. In many cases, the same password is used for the accounts at the registrars.

Make a printout of all "Snaps" that occur and the account information included in the confirmation e-mail, and keep them in an easy-to-remember place. If you do various snaps, you can end up with accounts at half a dozen registrars and it can be a hassle to dig up that info, when you're ready to transfer the domains after 60 days.
