One could go look at the SERPs for "widgets" or "widget-related" and answer most of these questions for one's self I suppose. ;)

Personal preference I suppose. Both are fine.

Both are FINE but widgets.com/subdomain: would be more easy to manage. (making links and updating them inside a domain) SubDir can use all the images from the same place but for subDomains it would be harder to keep all of your images at same dir on the domain.

hi you all dont know me but ive been around along time in the adult sector and am now getting out of it because of personal issues, anyway in respect to the question, when you use subs, the search engines will tend to think subdomain.widgets.com as a domain unto its self, and get a better ranking for the root index page of that sub, while it will see widgets.com/subdomain, it will take it as such a subdomain, and although it will get listed using it the other way will be alot better in the long run for you.
